About Mahodaya
MAHODAYA – formerly named "Amanikan" – is an authentic phinisi vessel constructed by master wooden boat builders of eastern Indonesia. Their highly-skilled craftsmanship and unique artistry have earned them recognition from UNESCO, which has designated phinisi boats as "Masterpieces" of traditional Indonesian culture and heritage.
A Distinguished Legacy
Construction was first commissioned by Adrian Zecha, the visionary founder of Regent Hotels, Rafael Hotels, Amanresorts, and the acclaimed Azerai Resorts. The vessel was built in 2009 and has since voyaged extensively throughout the Indonesian archipelago, playing host to prominent international visitors seeking authentic luxury experiences. Now independent, the ship's name has been changed to Mahodaya, a Sanskrit word meaning "great fortune or prosperity" – a fitting tribute to the extraordinary journeys that await.
Traditional Masterpiece
The phinisi is a traditional Indonesian sailing vessel, handcrafted using centuries-old techniques passed down through generations of master boat builders in South Sulawesi. Each vessel is unique, built entirely from local hardwoods without the use of blueprints – a testament to the builders' exceptional skill and intuitive understanding of naval architecture.
UNESCO's recognition of phinisi boat-building as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity acknowledges not just the craftsmanship, but the cultural significance and environmental knowledge embedded in this traditional practice.
Exquisite Indonesian Elegance
Mahodaya's elegantly appointed interiors were created by the late Jaya Ibrahim, Indonesia's most renowned interior designer whose portfolio includes some of the world's leading properties:
a. Several iconic Amanresorts
b. The Dharmawangsa Hotel, Jakarta
c. The Legian, Bali
d. Current Mahodaya and Azerai Resorts offices in Jakarta
All Mahodaya luxury yacht renovations and upgrades were carried out by the original design team and wood workers who retain a deep attachment to the vessel, ensuring every detail maintains Jaya Ibrahim's original vision of understated Indonesian elegance.
Modern Connectivity
In 2019, the vessel was significantly upgraded with cutting-edge technology:
